Via Piccolomini’s Optical Illusion

Via Piccolomini is a street of Rome, close to the Gianicolo Hill, in a higher position than the rest of the city able to offer a wonderful view of Saint Peter’s Dome.


This street hides a specific architectural aspect that produces a particular optical effect: Going along the street, when moving closer to the Dome, it appears to become smaller, while going further away from it, the Dome appears to grow bigger.

This optical effect amazes anyone who tries to discover the reason behind it.
