St. Peter’s Basilica
The St. Peter’s Basilica is not only the focal point for millions of pilgrims but also a true cultural, historical, artistic and architectural landmark.
Built where St. Peter was crucified in the 64 A.D., the new Basilica and Square took over a century for their construction, from 1506 to 1626. It was a project that united the most brilliant mind of that time, like Bramante, Bernini and Michelangelo.
The classic Renaissance structure holds many treasures within itself, including painting, sculptures, mosaics, marbles and art decorated walls. Among those, the ones that attract many people from around the world are the perfect Pietà of Michelangelo, the enormous Baldachin and Chair of St. Peter by Bernini, the Papal Grottoes and the breathtaking Dome.
St. Peter’s Basilica holds many records, including the largest church and the tallest Dome in the world. It was also given the attribute of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
