ST. PETER’S BASILICA, THE ART OF THE CENTRAL NAVE

St. Peter’s Basilica’s Central Nave is an architectural and historical masterpiece, approximately 187 meters long and 45 meters high. Its grandeur is designed to inspire every visitor.

Primarily the work of Carlo Maderno in the early 17th century, the nave transformed Michelangelo’s Greek cross plan into a Latin cross layout. This change symbolized a return to early Christian Basilica tradition, emphasizing the faithful’s journey towards the altar. Maderno extended the nave and added the facade, creating a spatial experience that directs the gaze towards the high altar and dome, an effect Heinrich Wölfflin called “space directed towards infinity.”

Gian Lorenzo Bernini then masterfully completed the nave’s decorations and arrangement. His work includes many sculptures and decorative elements enriching the walls and pillars. The imposing fluted marble pilasters flanking the nave support majestic barrel vaults, adorned with gilded stuccoes and frescoes celebrating St. Peter and the Church. Niches within these pilasters house 39 sculptures of saints, adding dynamism to the space.

Key details to observe include the barrel vaults with their richly decorated coffers, providing grandeur and lightness through skilled use of color and light. The polychrome marble floor and wall coverings create a luxurious visual effect. The pilasters, initially painted to imitate marble, were clad in real marble only in the 20th century. On the marble floor, partly designed by Bernini for the Jubilee of 1650, you’ll find plaques indicating the lengths of other great basilicas and a porphyry slab where Charlemagne and other emperors were crowned.

The nave is a symphony of architecture, sculpture, and painting, a sublime expression of Baroque art serving spirituality and papal power. Natural light filtering through large windows and the dome’s lantern illuminates the nave with a mystical aura, enhancing the artworks and fostering profound spirituality.
