PALATINE HILL, THE SECRET OF THE “STADIUM OF DOMITIAN”
Did you know the Palatine Hill hides secrets far older and more fascinating than you might imagine?
Many know the Palatine as the legendary birthplace of Rome, where Romulus founded the city. But there’s a lesser-known curiosity that will leave you amazed!
When you visit the Palatine and stand before the impressive structure known as the “Stadium of Domitian,” you might envision chariot races or athletic contests. The truth, however, is quite different and far more luxurious! This wasn’t a public stadium for sports, but rather a magnificent private garden shaped like a circus, enveloped by elegant porticoes and adorned with sculptures.
Imagine Emperor Domitian strolling here, amidst the peace and luxury, far from the crowds of the Circus Maximus. It was an oasis of tranquility and beauty, a personal “hippodrome” where perhaps small private events were held, but never the grand competitions we usually imagine. Its size, in fact, was too small for actual races.
